The broadest subject in the syllabus. It is not understood system by system, but through the question asked of each one: what happens when it fails?

Design philosophies, loads and stresses, fatigue, maintenance, airframe construction, materials and structural limitations.
Hydraulic systems, landing gear, brakes and tyres, primary and secondary flight controls, fly-by-wire.
Bleed air, air conditioning, pressurisation, ice and rain protection, and the architecture of the fuel system.
Fundamentals, batteries, DC and AC generation, distribution, protection and electrical motors.
Piston engines and propellers, then gas turbines: compressors, combustion, turbines, ancillary systems, operation, performance and the APU.
